This is an idea I had a few days ago as I went through all my old hard drives trying to salvage the broken ones (alas, all of them were dead). This one is a very old 4 gig drive.

So, this is what happens when a hard drive dies. It gets out of it's slot and hangs it's self :evillaugh:

Or so I like to think =P

This is a panoramic shot made up of 42 images, so there's a few spots where the focus is off, but I don't think you can really tell on this smaller image.

Let me know what you think :)

Lots of Photoshop here. I tried a few different things to put more focus on the drive, but in the end I decided to darken and desaturate the computer parts a bit.

Thanks :D

Yeah I wasn't sure about this, but I think it works out decently.

Haha yeah, but it's not meant to look like it's a panoramic shot =P

The full size of the shot is actually 6543x6432 pixels, which is about 42 megapixels, which is way larger than I could have done on a single shot. You'll also see that some parts of the computer curve a bit, which I find interesting.

It would be more useful if the drive could slide out of its slot and take itself to the recycling center, after replacing itself with a new one. Perhaps feature comes as standard with RAID-9000?

And a very desirable one for server administrators. :ninjaplot:

uh, it took me days to just break the hard drive's cap without special screwdriver. :P

I'm not really sure i saw the panoramic image feel here, to be honest. Also the hanging, opened hard drive, didn't make the "Suicide" feel on the first glance until i saw the power cable's knot which was less catchy than the broken HD's disks.

Maybe its just because my PC was often looks like that, because I treat normal HDs like portable HDs so the cables were crawling out of the casing and i never close the casing. :paranoid:

I have a bunch of torque screwdrivers, but I didn't have one small enough for this drive, so I just took the dremel to it =P

And no, this isn't meant to look like a panorama shot. I just did it this way to have a large final image. The final look to this isn't quite what I wanted, but because there's so many cables in my computer, it was hard to make the hanging wire/knot stand out. I might redo this with twine or something. I have another with a nylon rope against a plain white background, so I might play with that and upload it.
