Forums...

Forgive me, I don't often complain about things here, I simply don't have much to complain about. But I do now.

I've noticed a lack of moderation in the deviantART Forums recently. As many of you know, I spend a lot of time in the forums. I have for the last three years or so. To me, they are a great place to have fun, ask tech questions, talk about movies, or anything really. It's good times.

But as with anything on here, spammers will pop up and start spamming shite about being able to rip DVDs to our iPods or some referal link to some crappy site or something. I've seen a ton of spam in my time. And it usually gets cleared up pretty fast.

But not so much now. Even simple errors in where something should go take longer to get sorted out. I've seen threads in the dAmn forum go 5 or 6 hours without someone giving them information about what that forum is for, and to close the thread. That may not seem like a very long time, but it really is. When you have 22 MN@, there is a good chance someone is awake and in the forums at any given point. The MN@ are in charge of both the chat service AND the forums, but I feel that more attention is given to the chat service than the forums :(

More people use the forums. That's the simple fact. Yes, problem users on the chat service can be more of a problem since it's real time, and things can get really ugly really fast, but that shouldn't mean more time is spent on the chat service than the forums. I mean, I don't expect them to find all problem threads within 5 minutes or anything, but I've noticed that it takes longer for things to get sorted out than before.

It just makes me sad is all :( The forums on deviantART are a great place. I just hope they can stay great is all.

And this is in no way a bash on the MN@. I love them, they do great things here. I just think that we need a few more forum oriented MN@?

Anyway, sorry to sound all down and emo. This has been bothering me for a little while now, and just had to write about it.

Hey all, my name is Jon spence. I grew up in Ann Arbor Michigan and I am currently going to college at Ferris State University for Television and Digital Media Production.

I mostly do photography work, but I also do film work. I mostly do compositing and add effects to video. Think of it as a sort of photo manipulation for video.

My photography started in high school when I took my first photo class. I learned a lot and loved it. Next semester I took the next photography class offered there and learned some more. But after that I had to graduate so I went to my community college and took another class. I think I learned more in that class than any of my previous classes. Pushing and pulling film, the zone system, some advanced film tricks, bla bla bla. I own a few cameras ranging from a Detrola from 1940 to a Pentax K1000, a few pinhole cameras, and a Canon Powershot SX100 IS. Like I mentioned before, I'm learning all about television in my program, so I also know shit loads about television, video cameras, compositing, technical stuff and DVDs.

If spam is starting to cloud the forums then they should look into adding an anti-script part to the account sign-up process if they haven't already.

Hmm, I don't really know much about that. Seems like it would be hard to do. But if it can work, I say do it :#1:
Yeah, some MMOs are actually doing them on sign-ups now: those little screen with the tilted/distorted/overlapping letters and numbers that you have to type out. Heck, I searched on Hellgate: London's forums without logging in and I had to fill out one of those little things. Really helps with stopping script-bots from generating mass-accounts and other such actions.

Ah yeah, those are pretty popular it seems. It's called a CAPTCHA [link]
Ive had that problem aswell with my forum. i wish there was a way i could help out.

You choose what you do not change, every moment is an opportunity for change.
CAPTCHAs don't work, they never really have, it's a false sense of security and they've been cracked for years. Plus it violates US Code 508 Accessibility Requirements.

Well it's as I keep telling you Jon from what I've been hearing you know what their stance is on the forums :|

I don't know what you keep hearing, nor from who -- but it certainly never anything from me, nor $Tachy-on and considering we're the people who had responsibility for the forums over the past 3 years, it's kinda cute that you've used such a phrase ;)

There are infact some exciting plans in place for the forums which should fall into place in the next quarter or so. And to be quite frank, a misplaced thread staying open for 5 hours isn't exactly something that makes me think that the forums are falling to the dogs.

Maybe try giving you feedback to someone actually on the team though? I am sure they would be interested to hear.

Sunlight coming through the haze.
I meant no disrespect in that statement $chix0r but I was just merely stating what I heard. I know that is not the exact position of the staff or the MN@ but it does at least raise concerns at least for me.
