Download Your Entire Gallery

I found out about this handy little tip from this YouTube video here:

So basically you need Java (which probably most of you have), and then just this file: github.com/4pr0n/ripme (rarchives.com/ripme.jar for the direct link to the file.)  Then all you do is copy and paste your profile link into the program and click Rip.  A folder called rips will be created, and after a bit of time, you'll have downloaded all of the images (and descriptions) in your gallery.  I'd recommend these settings:

And you might also open the rip.properties file in a text editor and change the download.max_size = 104857600 to something bigger.  As the default, the max filesize of things it will download is 100 MB, but I doubled that to 200 MB just to make sure any large files get downloaded.  If for some reason it doesn't grab everything, run it again and check.  I found it missed a bunch of my files (and wouldn't grab the descriptions) the first time I ran it, but did it again and (I think) it picked up what it left behind the first time.

As some of you may know, dA has done the lay-off shinnigans again and who the hell knows what's in store for this site.  But I personally don't like the idea of dA closing its doors or being sold to some other company.  So just in case, I wanted to pass along this handy tool (which I assume works elsewhere, too) to download and backup your files (which you should have been doing all along.)  Enjoy :)

I get No images found at catkinsvedka.deviantart.com/ga… when I run the program. Might have something to do with that DA changed how their galleries works.

Tried and it seems to only download a few images of my favorites' first page. What l want is to download everything AND separate in folders by collection.
If it is possible to download the collections too, and save them in folders, how do I do so?
This new layout may be a problem, Image Bulk for instance is no longer dowloading everything .

I think I might be doing something wrong... but it doesn't seem to save text deviations.
That said, if I can get this to work, it will save a lot of concern I have while dealing with artists who have a habit of occasionally removing their entire gallery, or DA gets a bug up it's butt...

Just curious, I can send my tutorial faves directly to a thumb drive with this?

I tried it and only saw the images being retrieved. My main worry is the descriptions. I had the "save descriptions" box checked, but saw none in the rip folder :V

It all looks really cool, but at the same time it's a perfect tool to steal artworks, whole galleries and single ones, as someone asked earlier, ypu can even download your faves which is... worrisome

I don't really see it that way.  The artwork is already up, so anyone can steal anything they want.  This makes it easier to steal an entire gallery, but that was possible before too.  Simply put, you put your artwork online, and it will get stolen.

Don't be so paranoid. When you put something online it's there for everyone to see and if they want to download it, they can. Downloading is not stealing. If they do steal it, every website has a report/email function and you can get it removed. Not a big deal.

But are we able to download JUST the artwork?
I don't feel like old descriptions will be needed when I move to another site.
I don't write alot in them.

There's an option to save descriptions or not, the lower left option at the bottom orig03.deviantart.net/85be/f/2… and you can search (in Windows for *.txt) for text files and delete the entries, if you don't want any text files.

Does it work only for logged in users or for everyone? I'm not happy with anyone downloading full res pics from galleries. It would mean closing prints shop here.
On the other hand - a great too for people who lost their files or analogue originals.

Well yes, it does allow for a person to enter in any random person, and for them to download your gallery.  But, it would not allow them to get mature content deviations or content in scraps, as far as I know.

I don't mind people downloading anything I have in galleries in the web format (lower res, though they are still pretty big), I allow download of my works via the download button. I'm concerned about the higher res prints files which I always add extra for prints. I do not use for prints the same files which are visible in the gallery, so maybe it doesn't affect me, but for folks who add high res images for both prints and display and just set gallery visibility to lower res it means they will be literally ripped off. I've got to test it to see what it really downloads.

As far as I know, this program only  downloads the maximum size you provide, via the art site.  So any further print size is not available to it.  I basically only sees what a logged out user sees.

The bad news is, direct text files (such as Sta.sh Writer submissions), Journals, and Scraps seem to be ignored.

The good news is, downloadable files beyond pictures are recognized, so things like PDFs and ZIP archives should work too. Not sure whether it will read Muro Redraws.

I'm curious as to whether this will defeat my mortal enemy, 'Deviation in storage'.

Well the good thing is this is on github so you can view the source and make changes and then recompile it, although that's beyond me right now, although I might look into it (for getting writer submissions).

Yeah storage things is a problem, but a quick look at the source seems to indicate it can use a username/password to "log into dA" to possibly get things behind the user.  As for journals, I'm not sure there's a way to do that.  There used to be a link that would lead you to a page were it would simply list the content of all your journals here my.deviantart.com/journal/full… but they removed that.  It seemed pretty cool, Get your own Journal Word Cloud!Update: You can now get your own journal text to feed into Wordle.net's generator.

Journal Cloud
Wordle.net has a great feature where you upload the text from anything and it will create a neat word cloud based on the frequency of the words found in the text.
You can change the colors, layouts, maximum number of words, fonts etc. Very, very cool.
I wanted to base it on something personal so I got all the text from my deviantART journals, going back to 2003, and uploaded it to see the results.
Since it's not easy for anyone to get the text from their jou

Hmm. Suppose I shouldn't be surprised a tool like this exists. I guess it'll work on Mac too, as long as you've got Java installed.

That said, I don't think I'd have much use for this. I have the original files for all of my artwork archived, and to be honest reading the comments just makes me sad. Am already eyeing up Artstation as a new home for my art, should dA disappear. (I use Behance for work-related stuff, but there's some art in there too.)

Yeah I would hope everyone has or does do a decent job of backing up their work, however, as they say, not everyone might have done so.  So just in case, I thought I'd put this out there, just in case.  It's not a bad tool, and seems to work decently, just in case.

Text/literature and the like, I'm really not sure on, sadly.  I really only submit photos in my gallery, and while yes, it did pull the descriptions from my artwork, it formatted it rather oddly, so if it does pull literature to .txt files, it might do so in odd ways.  All I can say is, try it out and see?

Nifty for sure, if people don't have local copies of their stuff. I assume it can't somehow download the original source file though, if you've limited the max resolution.

For me, I have local backups of all my files, but it's the comments, journals, and interwoven history that I don't want to vanish. Back when the layoff happened I began archiving pages by hand using Mozilla's Archive Format (I feel like I've mentioned this to you before :o), but what I really want is a spider that'll do the same and preserve some of the links, ie to people's profile pages. I need to take another look at this...

It might be downloading a higher resolution format of the image?  I think for a lot of my "mini-planet" photos, I would upload the full size image, then chose to display it at a smaller resolution, and on at least some of those that it downloaded, it did get the full size.  I'm just not sure if it pulled it from the "click to view the full size" type image, or it went to the download.  But I did notice that it pulled the .zip file of a Photoshop action that I had made, rather than just the image of what I wanted represented.  So as for automated downloaders, this isn't so bad.

As far as user comments on things, yeah I sort of doubt there's a tool out there that could grab them all.  You'd sort of need to "save page as" on each deviation, saving the .html page and images and other resources, which gets to be quite conveluted.
